Norman Calhoun McLeod was the son of Katherine "Katie" McCormack and Archibald "Archie" McLeod, both born in North Carolina.
Some history: Norman Calhoun's father, Archibald McLeod, is thought to be the son of Sarah Clark and Norman McLeod. Norman emigrated from Isle of Skye, Scotland, circa 1774, with his father and brothers. They settled in Cumberland and Moore Counties NC. A 1747-1847 map of Moore County shows Norman living below Cabin Creek on Wet Creek, west of Carthage. Norman's land grant was near the present day town of Robbins. They were farmers.
The succeeding generation, i.e., Archibald McLeod, moved south into Richmond County in 1798 where he received two land grants. This is where Norman Calhoun McLeod was born in 1810.
Norman Calhoun married Elizabeth Abigail "Betsy" Terry on December 30, 1847. His brother, Daniel Calhoun McLeod, married Betsy's sister, Rosanna Terry. The sisters were from the long-established Terry family who were farmers and owners of lands north of Hitchcock's Creek, in the area of present day Roberdell (north of Rockingham).
Norman and Betsy first settled as farmers in Black Jack district in the northwest portion of Richmond County. About 1859, they moved to Fair Ground (present day Ellerbe), which is close to the Terrys and to their newly built church, Green Lake United Methodist Church. Norman served as treasurer of the building fund.
Norman and Betsy were the parents of six daughters and three sons. Two young daughters, Sarah and Jane, died in 1856. The remaining family survived the Civil War of 1861-1865, although the value of their real estate and personal property was greatly diminished. Norman and his sons were active in acquiring property in the following decades. After his death in 1892 (and that of his son Alexander's wife in 1896), the sons sold off much of the lands. Other parcels were left to his daughters and their husbands.
Norman, Betsy, Alexander, Daniel and Rosanna, as well as extended family, are buried at Green Lake UMC Cemetery.
