Both Mary and Robert were from Richmond County. In 1900, they were living in Red Springs, Robeson County. Robert was a grain merchant. By 1920, they had returned to live in Ellerbe, Richmond County, where Robert was Postmaster of the Mineral Springs Post Office. After his death in 1925, Mary lived for 30 years in Ellerbe. Her house was next door to that of her nephew, Lazelle Bennett McLeod, and his family.
Mary and Robert had no children of their own but they did care for a niece of Robert. In the 1920 US Federal census, 15-year old Annie Maitland Lyon is living in their household. She was the daughter of Robert's sister Lilly Lee Gibson Lyon who died of tuberculosis in 1917. Annie and her siblings were sent to live with extended family. She married Joseph Rufus Meachum of Wadesboro, Anson County NC.

The grave of Mary and Robert is situated near the cemetery entrance coming off Bear Branch Road. To their left are McNeill graves that are related to Mary's sister Frances McLeod McNeill. In front are Ellerbe graves related to Mary's sister Annie McLeod Ellerbe. Behind them is the large Elisha C. Terry family plot. The Terrys, McNeills, Ellerbes and McLeods are closely related via marriage. Elisha's daughter Kate was married to Mary's brother Alexander Calhoun McLeod.
