Roger was the youngest son of Leo and Nellie Duty Gates. He was in Cub Scouts,and in the third grade at the time of his death. He was hit by a car and killed as he ran to meet his mother who had been cleaning offices. He was Vinton county's first traffic fatality of 1963. He was survived by his parents and his older siblings Roland and Maryland.
