George John Gereg was born 27 Nov 1906, the son of Andrew Gereg & Veronika Cervenicki Gereg at home in Brookfield, Conn. He had 4 brothers and 3 sisters. His parents were born in Hungary and immigrated to the US settling in Brookfield. He went to school at Long Meadow Hill, followed by Henry Abbott Technical School and then Michigan Auto School graduating as a Master Mechanic. His wife of 58 years was Helen Benya Gereg. They were married on 25 June 1938 in St Joseph's Church in Brookfield Conn. She was a school teacher there. They had 3 boys; Richard of Wilton, James of Danberry, and Gerry Gereg of New Milford. He could work on and fix just about anything. He often helped fix cars for folks in need people for no charge. In 1939 he was hired by the Connecticut State Police to maintain their police cruisers and motorcycles in Ridgefield, Westport, and all around the local area. He retired from there 32 years later. At a Testimonial Dinner he received an honorary plaque which stated "To George Gereg, Doctor of Engineering and Moter vehicle Repair, who has kept the automotive fleet of the Connecticut State Police in excellent condition. From his friends the Connecticut State Troopers this 22nd day of 1971." His unique abilities included taming wild squirrels, and crows and playing the harmonica, excellent marksmanship and avid gardening. He was known for his sense of inventiveness, fairness and gentle humor which was with him until his last day. He was just a few days shy of 90 years old when he passed away on 24 Nov 1996 in Brookfield. Surviving him were his wife Helen, his children, two sisters Helen G Tucker of Brookfield, and Mary Markosky of Newtown, one brother Andrew Gereg of Brookfield, and several nieces and nephews.
