Hugh Richard Abernathey, 98, died on Saturday, March 1st, in Comfort, TX. He was born May 28, 1909, in Gaylord (rural Smith County), KS. He attended Kansas State University where he studied civil engineering & at that time he met Marguerite Evelyn Donovan. They were married Feb. 24, 1934 andhad 3 children, all of whom survive.
A veteran of WWII, Mr. Abernathey served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy (incliding Anzio), France & Germany & received 2 citations for bravery & meritorious service. His command was cited for having one of the highest ratios of enemy aircraft shot down & one of the lowest casualty rates of the European war. Mr. Abernathey & his family moved to Victoria, TX in October, 1945, where he managed the Heldenfels Bros. interests until his retirement. He also commanded the Victoria unit of the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Mr. Abernathey was predeceased by his first wife & mother of his children, Marguerite, who died in 1990. In 1996, he married Margelene Elizabeth Dannenburg, who died in 2006.
Mr. Abernathey is survived by 2 sons: the Rev. James Milton Abernathey of Palacios, TX & Michael Thomas Abernathey (& wife Lynne) of Comfort, TX; & 1 daughter, Diane Kay Coolidge (& husband Don) of Scottsdale, AZ. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren & 2 great-great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 1:30PM Wednesday, March 5th, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX. A memorial service will be held 2:30PM Tuesday, March 4th, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Victoria, TX, where Mr. Abernathey served as Vestryman, Warden, Treasurer, & lay reader. A memorial service will also be held at the American Lutheran Church in Athol, KS, 10:30AM, Monday, March 10th.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Vista Care Hospice of Kerrville, Trinity Lutheran Church of Victoria, or to the charity of choice.
