Nicholas John Ausman was born in Asotin on June 5, 1902, to Henry Johann and Alice Valeria Harbin Ausman. He attended grade school there and high school in Anatone. In high school, he played basketball. While attending high school he drove a kid wagon that was a team of horses and a wagon. In the winter, they put runners on the wheels to be able to go through the snow.

He married Gladie Parsley on May 12, 1923, at Lewiston. Gladie passed away in 1968.

Nick worked for Potlatch Corp. starting in about 1936 as a lumber grader for 32 years. He retired in 1967.

He also lived and worked in Winchester and New Meadows as a sawmill worker and logger. Later he moved to Anatone and worked for the Prairie Sawmill Co. in about 1926. He was a farm hand and logger in his younger days. As a boy, he worked with his dad herding sheep.

Nick later remarried. His second wife passed away in 1997.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his boys and grandsons. He also enjoyed gardening and his family. He enjoyed getting out with his sons and taking rides in the Blue Mountains to some of his old "stomps." He loved telling stories from his younger years.

He died at the age of 98 of heart failure on Oct. 8, 2000, at Evergreen Estates in Clarkston.
