Born to William and Annie (Jones) Ryan, Judge Ryan attended local schools, graduating from Sutter Creek High School in 1939. He attended the University of California at Berkley and received his Juris Doctor degree from U.C. Hastings School of Law. He served in the War Department during World War II and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Judge Ryan married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Lucot on July 21, 1945 in the Jackson United Methodist Church. He was the long time owner of Western Land Title Company and established a successful law practice specializing in real estate law, wills, and probate. Judge Ryan was elected Amador County Superior Court Judge and served in this capacity from 1977 to 1990 where he was highly respected for his integrity and intellect. He established the family walnut orchard at the Homestead Ranch near the family's Daffodil Hill and enjoyed working on both his ranch and the Hill. During his life he also enjoyed hunting and fishing, gunsmithing and wood working, flying his airplane with Mary as his co-pilot, working on his vehicles, his animals, and spending time with family and friends.
Judge Ryan was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 62 years, and is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Attorney George W. and Evelyn Ryan of Volcano, Sheriff Martin A. and Teresa Ryan of Sutter Creek, Treasurer-Tax Collector Michael E. and Debbie Ryan of Jackson; grandchildren, Kim Grady, Keith Ryan, Stacy Toma, Jody Matweyou, Joe Ryan, Jamie Ryan, Mitch Ryan, Casey Ryan; and 10 great-grandchildren.
