Zebulon Deans was born about 1770 in Connecticut. He was the husband of Olive Crocker Deans. He was the father of John F. Deans, James Deans, Orimel Deans, Matilda Deans, Phebe Deans, Lucy Deans, Fannie Deans and Olive Deans. Some research claims that he was one of the wealthiest men in Susquehanna County. A farmer and a carpenter, he reportedly owned 400 acres of land on part of which South Montrose was built.
