When John David Heatwole was born on 16 November 1941, in Parkersburg, Wood, West Virginia, United States, his father, Carl Robert Heatwole, was 42 and his mother, Enid Frances Evans, was 32.


Dave entered the United States Naval Academy on 7 July 1959 with the Class of 1963 and was honorably discharged on 19 February 1960 following a lengthy hospital stay due to a viral infection.


Dave served as Associate Dean of Admissions and Registration for Allegany Community College (now Allegany College of Maryland), Cumberland, MD from 1970 to 1979. He then moved to Jacksonville, Duval Co, Florida where he was self-employed and later became  an administrator and vice president of U.S. Seal Coating Inc. 


 He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Survivors included his wife, Martha; his mother, Frances, of Kissimmee; his daughters, Jenna and Brenda, both of Jacksonville, FL; and his sisters, Ann Luzader and Lee Chandler. 


He died on 30 March 1988 at the age of 46 while on a business trip to Denver, CO and was buried in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida.
