Dr. Richard D. Acker, 82, of Waterloo, died Thursday, July 24, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Waterloo, son of Wesley and Gertrude McFarlane Acker. He married LaRue Dietz on July 9, 1949, in Iowa City. Their marriage later ended. He married Carol Ferguson on June 1, 1972, in Rockford, Ill. She died in 2000.

Dr. Acker was in private practice in the office of Acker & Corton in Waterloo and was the medical director for John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for many years, retiring in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

Survived by: a son, Steve of Waterloo; two daughters, Debbie (Jim) Metcalf of Janesville and Joan ( Bob) Sansone of Peoria, Ill.; two stepsons, David (Dixie) Ferguson of Rockford and Paul (Trish) Ferguson of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Charlie and Clair Metcalf and Bobby Sansone; three stepgrandchildren, Kiley, Devon and Zach Ferguson; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Sauer of Rochester, Minn.

Preceded in death by: his wife; his parents; and a brother, Robert M.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with a private family burial prior to services in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway.
