BIO: by Karla Todd Sherer

Roger was my next door neighbor when I was a child. I knew him well and he was sort of grandfatherly to me. He was a little famous in his own right as he was one of the first patients of Dr. Michael DeBakey, world-famous Houston heart surgeon and inventor, to have his invention of a "Dacron Graft" to repair a torn aorta in the 1956-57 era. A procedure that would many years later be used on DeBakey himself. Dr. Michael DeBakey lived to be 99 and is famous for his many contributions to heart medicine along with contributing to the invention of the heart-lung machine as well as other major heart surgical equipment and procedures. As a child, I actually held a piece of that Dacron artery material in my hand and remember it well.

Roger was the Music Director of First Baptist Church in Newton, TX for many years. As my neighbor, he was also known to buy loads of watermelons in the summer to sell but gave most of them away or ate them. If you had a summer visit with him chances are he cut a watermelon for you to enjoy while there. On holidays, he also was one of the only "Fireworks" suppliers in Newton. He had a Feed business that he ran from home doing sales for "Occo" brand animal feed. An entrepreneur at heart, he simply expanded with fireworks at holiday time. As his neighbor whose family had a close friendship, he loaded his granddaughter and me both with fireworks each season. Knowing this man and growing up next door to him left many memories of him. When he died, he was the first person close to me that had passed away. A loving and giving man, and a bit of a character of his own accord, Roger is strong in my memory bank and was loved by me as well as many in Newton who knew his kindness and generosity for others. A strong Christian man who loved his family and friends and most of all his Heavenly Father.
