Zula married Otto Umlauf across the Tennessee border in Corinth, Mississippi on 2 October 1943 after a 2 month romance when she was 17 years old. They were married for 60 years when she died. From 1943 until 1945 she moved from airfield to airfield all over the USA with her pilot husband. In 1957 she and her family moved to Orlando, Florida where she lived until March of 2004. She was an accomplished seamstress. After raising her three daughters she returned to school and became an LPN, working first at Florida Hospital in Orlando and then for an OB/GYN Doctor. Her joy in life were her rescued pets and her family.
