Catherine Hawthorne
Former Metolius resident Catherine F. Hawthorne died Aug. 22, 2003, at the age of 90.
Mrs. Hawthorne was born April 16, 1913, in Greenpoint, N.Y., to parents Anthony and Elizabeth (Reid) Demarest. She attended both public and private schools and after graduation, worked for engineers on Madison Avenue in New York City. In 1942, she joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was shipped to Fort Richardson in Alaska.
On Jan. 6, 1944, she married Jean W. Hawthorne at Fort Richardson, Alaska. In 1948 they moved to Central Oregon, where they raised their family on a ranch near Bend. In 1974 they moved to Metolius. She most recently lived in Portland.
Survivors include her son, John W. Hawthorne of Portland; and daughter, Jean E. Latham of Ketchican, Alaska; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
No services were held, and a private inurnment was held at Gray Butte Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Niswonger, Reynolds Funeral Home in Bend.
