George Bowers
Madras resident George Harold Bowers died June 23, 2008, at East Cascade Assisted Living Center at the age of 88.
Mr. Bowers was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Brownsville, Ore., to parents George and Wanda (Leach) Bowers. In 1937, he rode over the McKenzie Pass on horseback to visit family who were local pioneers. On his trip, he spend the night in a barn at Midway Point and worked for local farmers without accepting pay.
He served in the U.S. military during World War II. On April 2, 1949, he married Maybelle June Bowers in Vancouver, Wash. They came to Madras in 1977 from Brownsville. He was self-employed as a rancher and farmer and was a dedicated horseman his entire life.
Mr. Bowers loved roping, hunting, and fishing, and was a member of the Madras Conservative Baptist Church. He was very devoted to his family and horses.
Survivors include his wife, June Bowers of Madras; children, Patty Krause and Wendy Smith, both of Madras; grandchildren, Shaun Kraus of Madras, Amy Hatcher of Newberg, and Stacey Bailey of Prineville; great-grandchildren, Tryston, Brynn and Tyton Kraus of Madras, Nathan Hatcher of Newberg; brothers, Ellis Bowers of Eugene, Wayne and Leroy Bowers of Creswell, and Stanley Bowers of Cottage Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dale and Willis Bowers.
A graveside service was held June 27, at Gray Butte Cemetery in Culver. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
