DEATH TAKES LAST CONFEDERATE VET HERE WEDNESDAY

William H. Patton, Who Joined Southern Forces at 14, Dies at Age of 94

STRICKEN SATURDAY

William H. Patton, 94, who enlisted in the Confederate army at the age of 14, and who was the last surviving Confederate veteran in this section so far as it is known, died Wednesday night at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. L. E. Gould, 1811 West Thirty-seventh.

Mr. Patton was active until Saturday when he suffered a stroke, never regaining consciousness. Death breaks a marriage of 63 years. Mrs. Patton, who is 85, still is active and in good health. The couple came to Wichita 11 years ago to reside with Mrs. Gould.

The aged war veteran was born October 26, 1846, on a farm near Warrensburg, Mo. During the early days of the Civil war he heard how badly the South needed help and although then only 14, he volunteered and served throughout the campaign. Large for his age, Patton was able to conceal his youth.

Most of the war he was with General Pierce's army and he saw much action. After the war he returned to Warrensburg. Later he went to Kansas City,Mo., where for 35 years he followed the trade of stationary fireman, being employed at the Savoy hotel and at Mercy hospital the largest part of this time.

Mr. and Mrs. Patton were the parents of a son, John, and a daughter, Lulu, both of who preceded Mr. Patton in death. In addition to Mrs. Patton he leaves Mrs. Gould, his only granddaughter, and two great granddaughters, Barbara Jane and Gwen Gould, at the home.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Byrd & Snodgrass Mortuary.

Mr. Patton's death follows by three days that of Kyus N. Kirkpatrick, another Confederate veteran here, who died Sunday.
