Catherine Steinbach Nicholson, 85, resident of 104 Lake Pointe Circle, wife of William H. Nicholson Jr. died Aug. 4, 2008 at Hospice House after a long struggle with cancer.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are a daughter, Susan T. Parke and husband, David G. Belser of Asheville, NC; two sons, William H. Nicholson III and wife, Suzanne of Greenwood and Stuart W. Nicholson of Brooklyn, NY; three grandchildren, William H. Nicholson IV, Elizabeth Foy Nicholson and Benjamin Parke Belser. Mrs. Nicholson was predeceased by her first husband, the Reverend Frederick H. Parke and by a brother, Stuart Wylie Steinbach.

Born in Burlington, NC, March 14, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Ernest O. and Madeline Pryor Steinbach. She received a bachelor's degree in 1949 from Agnes Scott College and received her master's of Christian Education degree from Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University in 1954. She served as Director of Christian Education at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Roanoke, VA, All Saints Episcopal Church, Atlanta, GA, and Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC. She was a former teacher at Greenwood High School and Piedmont Technical College.

Her career of service to others began with the American Red Cross during and after WWII, in Florida and Italy and continued throughout her life. Mrs. Nicholson was a tireless volunteer in almost every charitable organization in Greenwood and a founder of many. Her greatest influence in the Greenwood community may have been the establishment of the Greenwood Soup Kitchen Ministry, Greenwood Cancer Services and the Greater Greenwood United Ministry. In recognition of her lifelong devotion to charitable work, she was a recipient of the Jefferson Award, which was given by WFBC-TV. Her love and boundless energy will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.

She was a longtime member of Church of the Resurrection, Episcopal in Greenwood and attended the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda, NC.

Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Main Street United Methodist Church, with Reverend Nicholas Beasley and Reverend James D. Dennis Jr. officiating.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda, NC.

The family is at the home of W.H. Nicholson III, 115 Ashford Place in Gatewood and will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
