Actor. He is best remembered for his recurring portrayal of the laid-back Chuck Atwell in the television series, "Peyton Place." Born Mario Acalde, he was raised in a working-class family. After attaining his degree in theatrical arts from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, New York, he made his professional debut as a leading man in "Captain Brassbound's Conversion" (1950). While appearing in "The Flowering Peach," he was discovered by actor Robert Montgomery. Impressed by his dark good looks, slim physique, and articulate voice, he took notice of his potential and arranged for him to relocate to California and being a career in television beginning with him appearing on a supporting role within his own television show. From there, he would go to flourish as a character actor appearing in over 60 features; often typecast as husbands, fathers, lawyers, jurors, detectives, photographers, reporters, cowboys, sheriffs, retail clerks, blue-collared guys, gigolos, sidekicks, clergymen, villains, medics, playboys, soldiers, gamblers, con-artists, educators, eccentrics, landlords, mailmen, foreigners, chauffeurs, waiters, doormen, and faithful servants. During the advent of television, he flourished as a household name appearing in numerous guest spots on such syndicated sitcoms as "Kraft Theatre," "Danger," "Goodyear Playhouse," "Studio One," "Man With a Camera," "The Third Man," "Have Gun - Will Travel," "The Texan," "Overland Trail," "One Step Beyond," "The Islanders," "The Roaring 20's," "Outlaws," "The Untouchables," "77 Sunset Strip," "Dr. Kildare," "Route 66," "Bonanza," "The Eleventh Hour," "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "Ben Casey," "Laredo," "The Jackie Gleason Show," "Run for Your Life," "The Outsiders," "Gunsmoke," "Insight," "It Takes a Thief," "McCloud," "The Virginian," and "Ironside." He also appeared in such full-length feature films as "Crowded Paradise" (1956), "All The Young Men" (1960), "Dead Ringer" (1964), and "Clay Pidgeon" (1971). During his career, he was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, had been a regular parishioner of the Catholic church, was an active member of the Hollywood Democratic Committee, was the celebrity spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, was vice-president for his local charters of the American Red Cross and the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, and he was a theatrical instructor for the Pasadena Playhouse. After appearing in what would be his final acting role, Alcade died unexpectedly from the complications of undisclosed causes.
