William Riley Self, LDS ID KCTY-2VN, was the son of Rebecca Rooker, K4VB-KSB (1801-1892), and Lemuel Saunders Self, K8CB-XKT (1801-1878).

He served in the Civil War as a Corporal in Co. E, 6th Regiment, NC State Troops; was wounded at Gettysburg; captured at Winchester, VA, July 20, 1864; paroled and exchanged March 10/12, 1865.

He married first in Catawba Co., NC, May 13, 1858, Mary Magdalene Bost, KCPF-NNS (1839-1876); they had five children:

1. Alice L. Self, LJKT-SKX, #114460838, born in Cleveland Co., NC, August 13, 1859; died in Cleveland Co., NC, October 12, 1860; buried at Saint Peters Methodist Church Cemetery, Lawndale, Cleveland Co., NC

2. Frances "Frankie" Self, 94QY-W1X, b. 1865

3. William Augustus "Gus" Self, 9WHM-F6H, #86510364, was born in Catawba County, NC, September 16, 1866; died at age 78 in Hickory, Catawba Co., NC, August 9, 1945; buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Hickory, Catawba Co., NC. Gus married Mary Catherine Robinson, #166175536, daughter of Elizabeth Shuford and John W. Robinson. Mary was born in North Carolina January 7, 1867; died in Catawba Co., NC, June 25, 1951; buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Hickory, Catawba Co., NC

4. Anna E. Self, LJKT-369, #114460393, was born in Cleveland Co., NC, June 6, 1867; died at age 1 month, 20 days, in Cleveland Co., NC, July 26, 1867; buried at Saint Peters Methodist Church Cemetery, Lawndale, Cleveland Co., NC [Note: Anna was probably the daughter of his brother Riley Lee Self and sister-in-law Margaret C. Summerow as her grave marker reads daughter of R. & M. Self.]

5. Oliver Lee Self, LJKR-1MW, #92231771, was born in 1868; died at age 1 month 13 days, September 21, 1868; buried in Old Saint Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Newton, Catawba Co., NC

6. Sarah Naomi Self, 94QY-WB9, #129247482, was born in North Carolina July 26, 1871; died a widow at age 63, widowed, in Newton, Catawba Co., NC, February 15, 1934; buried in Eastview Cemetery, Newton, Catawba Co., NC, February 17, 1934. She married in Catawba Co., NC, May 28, 1890, Charles Edward (or Edmond).

William Riley Self married second Catherine Ann Summerrow, KZSG-HCB (1857-1923). They had six children:
