LELA HAZEL ROGERS

Lela Hazel Lochelt Rogers, age 94, of La Grande, died Saturday, June 22 at her residence in La Grande. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Island City with Bishop Grant Holman officiating. Interment will follow at the Island City Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Mrs. Rogers was born November 15, 1907 in Vernal, Utah to Fredric William and Hazel Nathalia (Hodson) Lochelt. At about age 12, she moved with her family to Northern California where she resided for most of her early life. Mrs. Rogers married Richard E. Rogers on October 19, 1941. They moved to Cove in 1956 and settled in La Grande in 1964 after living for a time in John Day and Prineville. She worked at various jobs early in her life, including the dry cleaning business during WWII where they were contracted to clean soliders' uniforms. Mrs. Rogers was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended La Grande Third Ward. Through her life she held many positions in the church but her favorite service was in relief Society. "Working with the sisters was always a blessing" she so often commented. Mrs. Rogers' life was one of service and compassion to others. Her daughter says her family, friends and home were her priorities to which she dedicated her life. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, quilting and watching and listening to the songs of the many variety of birds around her lawn and garden. Mrs. Rogers is survived by her daughter, Barbara Bloom of Cove; a step-daughter, Carol Nichols of Sacramento, California; sister, Betty Hershey of Sacramento, California and six grandchildren, including Cherie Murray of La Grande who lived with her for many years, Dwight Bloom of La Grande, Tom Martin of North Bend, Ann Bloom-Dickison of La Grande and Rick Bloom of La Grande, as well as numerous other relatives. Her husband, son-in-law, Ed Bloom of Cove, two sisters, two brothers and one granddaughter preceded her in death.
