Mother: Anna Broadwell Martin (25 Jul 1873 KY - 29 Aug 1956 CA)

Siblings:
Ava Geraldine Koehler Kyte (Find a Grave Memorial #29356867)

Leota Mae Koehler was born in Macedonia, Iowa where she and her two sisters lived until they moved to California in 1908. Their father, A Robert Koehler, was a jeweler. The initial "A" did not stand for anything, but, as a jeweler, he liked to engrave that letter, thinking it was beautiful, so he just added it to his name!

A Robert died about 1907, and his widow and the three girls moved to San Jose, California where her brother, Tandy Martin was living. Her name was Anna Brodwell Martin Koehler and she was always known as "Anna 8". Everyone called her that.

In San Jose Anna B supported the family by running a boarding house. She never remarried and was able to send all three girls to college, and into long lasting marriages. Leota graduated from San Jose Normal School, now San Jose State College, and briefly attend classes at Stanford University.

While in school she earned money by working as a porcelain painter at the Cora Gillespie studio in San Jose. The family has a few of the pieces that bear her initials. She did beautiful work in the Art Nuevo stile.

The story of their marriage is amusing. A large fancy wedding was planned. There were
engagement parties, notices in the newspaper, and gorgeous lace "flapper" dress purchased. Joe was working for the Oil Company and was traveling in Arizona. His boss would not let him off for the planned wedding date, so Leota hopped on the train and went to Arizona, where they were married by a justice of the peace in a very small, quick service. The fancy wedding dress was never worn.

Leota is buried in the Madronia Cemetery, Saratoga, Santa Clara County, California. Plot: 78 E.#5
