At the time of his death, Michael was a clergy member of the Western North Carolina conference of the United Methodist Church. He was ordained in 1972 as an Elder of the Church. He served as Associated Director and then Director of the Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry. During this time he served as associate pastor of Trinity UMC in West Asheville, then as Pastor of the Mitchell charge and the French Broad Church.
He was a graduate of Wake Forest University (Magna Cum Laude), The University of Chicago, Emory University: The Candler School of Theology. Later he obtained a Doctor of Sacred Theology from Emory University.
His parents were the late Sherman Taft and Pansy Thompson Anderson. On September 20, 1980 he married Phyllis Carol Roe, also a United Methodist Minister.
He began to pursue a focus on Pastoral Counseling. From 1974-78 he was a chaplain of the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1988, with Phyllis, his wife, he moved to Hawaii where they founded and directed the Samaritian Counseling Center.
Stricken by a sudden illness he never recovered. A service of death and resurrection was held in Honolulu where Michael was an affiliate member. A graveside service in his beloved North Carolina Hills was held at Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina.
