Judge Morgan was a graduate of Wake Forest University and received his law degree in 1945 from the Cumberland University School of Law in Lebanon, Tenn. His career first carried him to Columbia, South Carolina where he served as a corporate attorney for an engineering firm and also built a private practice. His heart remained in Harnett County, however, and soon found himself back home and being sworn in by the North Carolina Bar in 1954. In 1956, he was elected as a county judge in Recorder's Court, the predecessor to the district court system, receiving all but seven votes in his home precinct. He served in that capacity until 1968, when he was appointed the chief district judge for the 11th Judicial District, for Harnett, Lee and Johnston counties. He remained in that position until his retirement from the bench on Sept. 1, 1978. He was a lifelong member of Kipling United Methodist Church and became a Mason in 1949. He enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren. Judge Morgan was preceded in death by a son, John Morgan; son-in-law, Craig Marks; brothers, John and William; and sisters, Lena Morgan, Lucille Morgan, Laura "Tot" Corvi, Lillian Anasti, Elizabeth "Lib" Capillary, Lois Avent and Dorothy Lillie Cotton.
