John E. Bechtel, son of John and Jane Bechtel, was born in Nebraska December 21, 1889.
He grew up in Earlham where he worked in his father's restaurant, later taking over the management.
He graduated from Earlham Academy in 1909 and was shortly afterward married to June Neff, who passed away in 1918, leaving him with two small daughters and a son; a younger son having died in infancy. He married Daisy Phillips, February 9, 1920.
For a number of years he continued in the restaurant business in Earlham, serving his community in various ways, as opportunity offered.
He moved to Des Moines in 1942 where he engaged in a salesmanship business for various firms, until his retirement.
He passed away March 29, 1969, at the Des Moines general hospital in Des Moines after a brief illness.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and the infant son, John Jr., his parents, a stepson, James Phillips, a stepdaughter, Dorothy Phillips Snyder, and six brothers and sisters.
He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, Daisy Bechtel of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Mrs. A. E. Kees (Kathryn Phillips) of Arlington, Virginia; two daughters and their companions. Mr. and Mrs. Vern Carlson (Beatrice) of Madrid, and Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Woods (Byna) of Waukee; a son, Victor, of Grand Ledge, Michigan; twelve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren; also two sisters, Elsie Bechtel Lind, Des Moines, and Clara Bechtel Hodson.
