Dr. Stanis S. Melendez, Jr., 69 of Chicago.

Dr. Melendez was a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C.

He served during World War II as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the 318th Engineers Combat Battalion. He received the Soldier's Medal for his heroic attempt to save the lives of three soldiers who drowned in the Colorado River while their unit was stationed at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona.

Dr. Melendez had a private practice in Chicago from 1945 to March of 1984.

Services for Dr. Stanis S. Melendez Jr., 69, a physician who had offices at 231 E. 75th St., were held Thursday. Dr. Melendez, of the South Side, died Tuesday in Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. A native of Pittsburgh, he came to Chicago to serve his internship in Provident Medical Center, and established his own practice after serving in the Army Medical Corps in World War II.

He is survived by his wife Gwendolyn; a daughter, Carmen Maria Rhinehart; a son, William Stanis Melendez; a granddaughter, Rachel Melendez, and a stepson, Guilford Cofield.
