John and his brother Jacob were pioneers when they moved from Hagerstown to Brownsville PA in February 1786. He bought and sold several parcels of land starting as early as 1796. John was a hat maker and was listed as a township official (Supervisor) in 1803.
John married Mary Carpenter in the early 1800's and they had three children: Simon Bowman, James Pearson Bowman and Mary Bowman.
John is listed in the "History of The Bowman Family" on file at the Hagerstown Md Historical Society.
