Revolutionary War - first a volunteer in Captain Elijah Dewey's Company, Colonel Moses Robinson's Regiment, Vermont State Militia; later volunteered into Captain William Hutchins's Company, Colonel Samuel Fletcher's Regiment with rank of Corporal.

War of 1812 - commissioned as Lieutenant by Governor Tomkins. Served with Corp of Exempts to defend French Mills (the area of Fort Covington).

Referred to as "Major" in later years but no record of appointment has been located, suggesting it may have been an honorary title.
