Jonathan Barton was born on September 11, 1754, in Spencer, Massachusetts. He was the son of Timothy Barton and Hepzibah Stowe. His mother died when Jonathan was only 12 years old. In May of 1775, Jonathan enlisted in the Massachusetts Regiment of the U.S. Army, and served eight months in Capt. Joel Green's Company. He then re-enlisted and served as a Corporal until January, 1777. He took part in Colonel Learned's retreat from New York, and in the battles of Frog Point, Trenton and Princeton.

On December 13, 1781, Jonathan Barton married Hannah Dix, who was born September 21, 1759 in Leicester, New York, the daughter of Benjamin Dix and Mehitable Sanderson. They married in Whitingham, Vermont. The marriage was also recorded in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Jonathan was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Whitingham. About 1795 Jonathan moved the family to Hoosack, New York where they spent 2 years, and then to Bennington, Vermont for a year before settling in Bolton, New York around 1800. Jonathan was listed as head of a family on the 1800 Census in Bolton, New York. Jonathan and Hannah had seven children. Aparently, Jonathan was never a very successful farmer, because in 1819, he applied for a soldier's pension, saying he was "poor and in need of assistance." Hannah died June 1, 1824. Jonathan lived a few more years and died February 4, 1830. They are both buried in the Bolton Rural Cemetery.
