SUGAR CITY - Boyd Bingham Ashcraft, 68, of Sugar City, Idaho, died October 13, 2000 at his home.
He was born August 28, 1932 in a small cabin near Moody Creek (Rexburg), Idaho, to Vernia Gleason Ashcraft and Verna Bingham Ashcraft. He was the seventh child and spent many of his childhood days herding cows in the Moody Creek area. He attended elementary school in Teton, Idaho and high school in St. Anthony, Idaho, where he graduated in 1950.
He ten attended Ricks College before being called to serve his country in the Korean War on August 17, 1953 where he received special training as a paratrooper. Upon returning home he served in the California mission from 1955 to 1957.
After his mission he returned to Ricks College where he met his "Sweetheart," Helen Mary Fielding. On December 19, 1958, they were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
He spent most of his life engaged in farming and doing other odd jobs as necessary, such as working for Red Baron Billiards and construction with his brother, Glenn. He also took a DeVry technical training course in radio and television servicing and then worked for El-Gene's TV and Appliance.
He and his brother, Grant, were the first to drill an irrigation well of the hills northeast of Rexburg. He also served as president of Teton Stage Lines during the 80s and early 90s.
He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Elders Quorum President and counselor, High Priest Group Leader, Sunday School teacher, home teacher, Branch Presidency counselor, and Stake High Counselor at Ricks College.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Sugar City; 12 children, Lavona Woodward (Dee) of Cascade, Idaho; Susan Bell (Dennis) of Preston, Idaho; Tawna Jean Ashcraft of Babenhausen, Germany; Douglas Ashcraft (Loretta) of Hamer, Idaho; Garth Ashcraft (Penny) of Portland, Indiana; Blaine Ashcraft (Tammy) of Sugar City; Colleen Bunn (Doug) of St. Charles Missouri; Kenneth Ashcraft (Mandy) of Billings, Montana; Joseph Ashcraft (Sharlyn) of Garland, Utah; Nathan Ashcraft of Sugar City; Aaron Ashcraft (Letisha) of Rexburg; and Phillip Ashcraft of the Louisville Kentucky Mission; eight brothers and sisters, Kathryn Billings (Cecil) of El Paso, Texas; Leara Ashcraft of Lakewood, California; Don Ashcraft (Joyce) of Ogden, Utah; Glenn Ashcraft (Lalamae) of Rexburg; Grant Ashcraft (Dorothy) of Sugar City; Lucile Higley (Ervin) of Inkom, Idaho; Reed Ashcraft (Annalee) of St. Anthony; Lawrence (Nancy) of Salt Lake City; and 28 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and an infant son.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at the Sugar City Stake Center with Bishop Garth Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
