OBITUARY Iron County Reporter Feb 27 2008 "Walter ‘Chick' Tass" with photo
IRON RIVER — Walter "Chick" F. Tass, 87, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 24, 2008, at the Iron River Care Center where he was a resident.
He was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Florence, Wis., the son of the late Julius and Mary (Litzke) Tass. He grew up in the Stambaugh area and graduated from the Stambaugh High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army for four years and was honorably discharged in 1946. On June 13, 1942, he married the former Florence Trevarton in Iron River, where the couple continued to make their home. For several years he worked for Roberg's Bakery in Stambaugh before opening the Cake Shop in downtown Iron River. He owned and operated the bakery for 13 years along with his wife Florence. They made 200 pasties a day for the mines, decorated cakes for weddings and other special occasions, baked bread, and sold many other pastries. After that he went to work in the Iron River Post Office and worked there until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iron River, the United Methodist Men's Club, and sang in the church choir. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed taking his family to Wrigley Field. He played baseball with his brothers on the Stambaugh City teams, developing a love for the game back then. He enjoyed fishing on Cooks Run and the Tamarack River and telling stories of the "big one" that got away. The family had talked for years about the two trips they took to the West Coast and also camping at Baraga State Park. "Pop" was a great husband, dad, and grandfather and was always thankful for what he had and what God had given his family. He and his wife enjoyed many trips together throughout the years. Among the places they toured were Florida, Hawaii, England, Nashville, and Arizona. He never forgot about the friends he had made while in the service and kept in contact with them throughout the years. He was a quiet and kind man but had great concern for others and showed it in his loving ways.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in November of 2006; a son Gary in December of 2007; twin granddaughters; four stepbrothers, Edward, Frank, Verne, and Joe LaBelle; and three stepsisters, Rose Johnson, Almede Kavich, and Ann Meyers.
He is survived by two daughters, Betty Lou (Dennis) Ward of Apache Junction, Ariz. and Susan (Steve) Wensel of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a son, Ron (Julie) Tass of Iron Mountain; a daughter-in-law Patsy Tass of Iron River; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iron River. The Rev. Mark Ryan, pastor, and Rev. Rex Dye will officiate.
Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery.
