CIVIL WAR PRISONER OF WAR

*Joseph Berry Sublette, the oldest child of Hill Sublette and Delphia Garrett, was born in Adair County Kentucky about 1812. During the 1820's Hill and Delphia and children left Kentucky and by 1830 they had settled in Upper Loutre Township of Montgomery County Missouri. By 1840 they were living north of High Hill, Montgomery County Missouri in Bear Creek Township. Joseph had three brothers; Littleberry(1818-1883)married Catherine Jones, James Garrett(1825-1905)married Eliza Carver,and Thomas Hill(1832-1880)married Mary Nimo. He had at least five sisters; Sarah(1816-1857)married Smith Griggs, Christiana(1819-1905)married Joseph Sanders, Martha(1823-1883)married George Greer and Marion Thurman, Emily married Urijah Zumwalt, Eliza Jane(1828-1915)married John C. Calhoun. Joseph married Sarah Norman, daughter of Berryman Norman and Betsy Basnet or Susan Whiteside, and they had six children; Elizabeth Ann(1835-1908)married Nathaniel Smith, Florentine Clementine(1838-1913)(Find A Grave Memorial Number 38587628)married Jacob Curtis(K) and Thomas McDermott, Berry Ferdinand(1840-1891)married Frances P. Williams, Nancy Jane(1842-1879)married James Polk Cook, Martha(1847-1920)married Garry Alonzo Bras, and Sarah(1850-1914)married George Washington Patton Sr. * Joseph was too old to enlist for active duty during the Civil War, but on January 14, 1862 he was captured, arrested, tried and found guilty of firing at a train carrying Federal troops(none were injured). Joseph was taken to the Military Prison at Alton, Illinois where he died on June 6, 1862. He is buried in Alton, in the Confederate Cemetery*. Bio by Betty Sublette Kuebler.


*Note: Joseph's middle name was Berry. ALLEN was not part of his name. There may have been another Sublette ancestor that was named Joseph Allen/Allan, but not the son of Hill Sublette and Delphia Garrett. Joseph and Sarah spent their entire married life in Montgomery County, Missouri, except for Joseph's time spent in the Alton, Illinois, prison.
