Vermilee Koenig, a retired Air Force wife, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, on her 91st birthday.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Arlington Heights United Methodist Church. Burial: Rose Lawn Memorial Park in Denton. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home.
Vermilee was born in Hortense and grew up in Livingston. After graduation from Sam Houston State College in Huntsville, she taught home economics in the Big Sandy school system.
Vermilee became a charter member of the Carswell Garden Club in 1949 when her husband, Col. Perier "Chick" Koenig, was first stationed here. Through the years, they were stationed at Carswell three times and retired to Fort Worth.
Vermilee was an active member of the Co-Workers Class and United Methodist Woman's at Arlington Heights Methodist Church. She was the "flower lady" there for 38 years, rearranging Sunday's altar flowers on Mondays for shut-ins, herself a recent recipient.
This tradition will be carried on by her much-loved friends.
Vermilee won the TWAF Award in 1961, City Wide Flower Cade highest award held each year in Fort Worth.
Other organizations that will miss this "never slow down, just give me a job" woman are Ridglea Town and Country Garden Club, Fort Worth Botanical Society, Past Presidents Garden Club, Girls Service League, Rejebian Book Club and Fort Worth Woman's Club. Vermilee was awarded a lifetime membership in the Fort Worth Garden Club for her many years dedication.
Vermilee was gifted with near perfect health her 91 years--and at 90 would not tell her age, "Friends will tell me to slow down."
From the flowers she arranged, to putting the finishing touches on tables, Vermilee was a perfectionist.
This Rose of Texas will be missed and thought of for years.
Vermilee was preceded in death by her husband, Perier Arnold Koenig.
Survivors: Her daughter, Peggy Koenig Marshall and her husband, Lyman W. Marshall; grandchildren, Brett Marshall and his wife, Stefanie and Danae Marshall Brooker and her husband, George; great-grandchildren, Marshall and Malia Brooker; cousin, Trish Matthews; nieces; and nephews.
