William enlisted in Company B, 7th Tennessee Cavalry on August 20, 1862 in Carroll County, Tennessee. He was apparently captured along with 500 comrades in Union City, Tennessee on March 24, 1864 and sent to prison. He died in Mobile, Alabama of scorbutus.
