James McGovern immigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana on 15 Oct 1828, about age 18 years. The trip took 13 weeks on an old fashioned sailing vessel.
He eventually settled in Muscatine, Iowa where he married Anna Fogarty. The couple were blessed with nine children.

Anna died in 1895 and was buried in the Atlantic Catholic cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa. James continued to reside on that farm until about 1902 when he moved to Atlantic.
James died of cancer of the throat at the home of his son, T.J. McGovern, in Brayton, Audubon county, Iowa. His funeral was at the Catholic church, and he was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa. --Information from 4-13-1908 "Atlantic Evening Star"
