He was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Austin, Minn. to Howard and Anna Forthum Jerred. He married Marie Kelley April 18, 1942. She preceded him in death Dec. 22, 2000. He married Myrtle Richards Dec. 29, 2001.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for John Morrell and Co. for 31 years and Hormel for 10 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple, a member of the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Association and O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and his family.
Surviving is a son, Mike Jerred of Wellsville, Kan.; two daughters, Julie (Steve) Hanel and Jeanne (Bob) Sorenson, both of Des Moines; stepdaughter Nancy (John) Vissage of Marietta, Ga., and stepson Ed (Judy) Richards of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Joann Snook of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Jerred; four sisters, Viola Jones, Clarice Criswell, Phyllis Tee and Donna Newman; and a brother, Howard Jerred.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ottumwa Baptist Temple with Rev. Randy Miller officiating.
Burial will be at Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
