Married on 5 May 1859, in Walker Township, Kent County, Michigan. First Sergeant George Thomas Patten served during the Civil War, in Company B, 6th Michigan Cavalry Regiment. The 6th Michigan Cavalry Regiment, along with the 1st, 5th, & 7th Michigan Cavalry Regiments made up the famed "Wolverine Brigade", commanded by Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer. First Sgt. Patten was killed in a mounted charge of two companies of the 6th led by Major Peter A. Weber at the Battle of Falling Waters, Washington County, Maryland.
