Josephine Smith, 89, a retired elementary school teacher, died Aug. 5, in rural Hillsboro.

A service is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, at Hills­boro United Methodist Church with pastor Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Mesa, Ariz.

She was born Dec. 31, 1918, to Miles and Myrtle (McMurray) Austin at Burrton. On Nov. 3, 1936, she was married to Harold Ancel Smith, who died in 1995.

She is survived by a son, John William Smith of Tracy, Calif; a daughter, Judy Troyer, rural Hillsboro; two brothers, Roger Earl Austin of Rosalia and Miles Austin Jr. of Alamosa, Colo; a sister, Betty Jo Worthington of Eagle River, Alaska; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be before the service on Saturday at Hillsboro United Methodist Church. A memorial has been established with the church.
