~MY ANCESTOR~
JOHN, eldest son of GOV. THOMAS WELLS, and his wife, ALICE TOMES, came with his parents to New England at about 15 years of age and removed to Hartford. He was made a freeman in the Conn. General Court on April 10, 1645. In 1647, he married ELIZABETH BOURNE.
His father gave him half of his lands and house at Farmington, but he sold them to JOHN THOMPSON, my ancestor, and removed to Stratford before April 1652. He was deputy to the General Court in Hartford 1656-1657. While his father was Governor, he was elected Magistrate of the General court. He served his community by proving wills, taking inventories & distributing estates in Stratford.
On April 20, 1659, he witnessed the signature of the sachem, Tautannimo, to a land deed. He died late that year since his will was written October 19, 1659
They were the parents of six known children, SARAH (WELLES) THOMPSON being my ancestor.
Other children: Capt. John Welles, Deacon Thomas Welles, Capt. Robert Welles, Temperance (Welles) Pitman, Sgt. Samuel Welles.
