In the early hours of last Friday morning, Star Valley's last Hand Cart Pioneer suddenly passed away with only a few members of his immediate family present. His death came as a shock to most everyone for he seemed to be in good health as usual and only shortly before he died was help called in. Heart trouble was probably the cause of his death.
William Joshua Crook was born in Centerville, New Castle, Delaware, June 1, 1857 and was the last person living in Star Valley who crossed the plains with a hand cart company. This was the last hand cart company to come west. He was only three years old when the started.
The Crook family settled at Kaysville, Utah but later moved to St Charles, Idaho, and from there to Fish Haven, Idaho. On October 14, 1880 he was married to Harriett J. Howell and for eight years they lived at Garden City, Utah. In 1888 they moved to Star Valley and settled in Smoot and have lived there since. Mr and Mrs Crook are parents of eleven children, nine boys and two girls. Six boys and one girl are now living.
Brother Crook has always been prominent in church and civic affairs. He was assistant superintendent in the first Sunday School organized in Smoot. He has served several terms as trustee in the Smoot public school and one term on the School Board of District No.19. He filled a mission for the L.D.S. Church in the Eastern States. His cheery greeting made him a friend of everyone. He was well known all over the Star Valley and will be greatly missed. He was honorary member of "Smoot Troop of Boy Scouts".
Funeral services were held at the Smoot ward house July 19 under the direction of Bishop Hugh W. Findlay, conducted by Joseph Allen, The speakers were L.C. Jensen, A. H Linford, C. H. Peterson, Albert Barrus, Bishop Ernest Allred of St Charles, Idaho and Joseph Allen. Albert Taggart and Bishop cook of Garden City offered the prayers. Music was by the Smoot choir under the direction of Mrs Geo. Lancaster. Special numbers were duets by Harold Peterson and Elmer Lancaster, Kate Hill and James Gomm, Retta Lancaster and Bernard Anderson.
Interment was in the Smoot Cemetery. The grave was dedicated by Hyrum Lancaster of Cresent, Utah.
Many Beautiful flowers were brought to the casket by friends and neighbors and the funeral was attended by friends from every ward in the valley.
Bro. Crook leave to mourn his loss his wife, Harriett, six sons, William H. of Freedom, Joshua L and Ezra J. of Etna, Ray of Fairview, Rulon and Harvey of Smoot. One daughter Mrs Ella Lancaster of Smoot, One brother Willard Crook of Idaho Falls, Ida. Thirty-three grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Those attending the funeral from out of the valley were: Mr and Mrs Willard Crook and daughters Hazel and Sarah and son Hubert; Mr and Mrs Leorin Crook, Samuel Crook, Hyrum Crook and Mrs Mary Crook all of Idaho Falls. Henry and Ernest Howell and Mrs Sarah Ella Findlay from Fish Haven, Idaho Bishop and Mrs Crook, Mrs Lydia Cook and daughter of Garden City Utah, Bishop Ernest Allred of St Charles, Idaho and Mr and Mrs Frank Dalton of Montpelier, Idaho.
