Tall worn marble obelisk made from a large single block of Carrara Marble deeply weathered with veining. The monument is located in the south-west quadrant of the Circle close to the Elliotson monument.

American financier. American born financier and philanthropist, he was a major benefactor to the city of Boston, Massachusetts. In 1852, he founded the Boston Public Library by giving $50,000 for that purpose. He was also a merchant banker, holding the position of senior partner at Barings Bank. Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, in 1828, he became associated with the great house of Baring Brothers & Co. of London, of which he eventually became senior partner. He became a British citizen in 1842, and divided his time between America and Great Britain. Then in 1852, he founed the Boston Public library, by donating $50,000, with the provision that the interest of the money should be expended on books of permanent value. He also gave 30,000 volumes to the institution, of which the main hall is named in his honour.
