Son of Joseph Heupel and Helena Unknown (Helena arrived to the U.S. as a widow)

He enlisted April 17, 1861 to fight in the Civil War, serving under two companies:
- 3 months as Corporal, Union Company K, 14th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry
- August 18, 1861 with disability discharge July 18, 1865 as 1st Sergeant, Union Company B, 37th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry

NOTE: Highlights of his military service - he was captured at Gauley Bridge Fayetteville VA September 11 1862, later was a prisoner exchange on December 25, 1862; severely wounded at the Battle of Mill Creek Bentonville NC March 21, 1865.

Married Catherine, February 5, 1862 in Lucas County, Ohio
