James Tazewell Goodson

J.T. Goodson, pioneer merchant of Davy, died suddenly of heart failure, at his home, Saturday, July 21, [1928] at 12:30 o'clock, at the age of 76 years.

Mr. Goodson was born in Floyd County, Va., in 1852, and on August 10, 1879, was married to Mary L. [Creasy] Johnson, of Montgomery County, Va. To this union thirteen children were born, six of whom preceded him to the grave.

He moved to Davy and engaged in the mercantile business with his son-in-law, I.H. McNeal,in 1904 the firm being known as McNeal & Goodson. He later purchased the interest of Mr. McNeal, and with his son, Wanless, continued in the business under the firm of J.T. Goodson & Son.

During his residence in Davy Mr. Goodson acquired considerable property, and became one of the community's leading and substantial business men.

He is survived by his wife, one sister, Mrs. Amelia Goodson, of Roanoke, Va., and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Charles Kirby, Coalwood; John Goodson; Mrs. I.H. McNeal, of Wilksboro, N.C.; Mrs. Roy Mitchell, Pageton; Arch Goodson and Ernest Goodson, Hellier, Ky.; Mrs. Light Shields, Davy, and Wesley Goodson, Davy.

In addition, there are 35 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren surviving.

The following children preced[e] him to the grave: Morris, Wanless, Matthew, Jeoffrey and John Goodson.

Funeral This Afternoon
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church, at Davy, this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, and will be in charge of the Rev. C.C. Bailey and the Rev. R.N. Woodward.

Interment will take place in the cemetery at Twin Branch. As a mark of respect to the deceased, all stores and business houses in Davy will be closed from 2 until 3:30 o'clock, for the funeral services. The body was prepared for burial by Hunter Brothers, of Davy.
