He was born Duane Michaels in Richmond Indiana and adopted by his parents Clay and Bertha Smith at age the age of 3 months. His mother Lavon died nine days after his birth.
Duane suffered from autism. He was significantly challenged in understanding and using common skills like managing money and the use of tools. He was resistance to change, and always lived at home. He was a hard worker all his life and his repetitive skills suited him in farming, landscaping and restaurant work. Because of his disability his employers would often take advantage in scheduling his hours and keeping his pay down.
He never forgot a name or birthday. He was a skilled skater in his youth and loved his church meetings on Sundays. He was intellectually gifted with his knowledge of history in general, but excelled in the history of aircraft and motorcycles. He loved to eat, and was always a tall lean man. Wish we could all do that.
Duane was a wonderful meek person, a kind uncle, and a devoted family member. His sister and he where very close all his life. She had always looked after and cared for him. He died at the home of his sister in New Port Richey, FL. of bladder Cancer. We all loved him and Miss God's gift to us.
