My Grandfather
Raffaele Molinaro was born in the village of Serrastretta, near Calabria, Italy. He emigrated to the United States with his young wife, Angelina and son, Louis Molinaro. They settled in New York for several years before moving to Baltimore, Maryland. Four more children would be added to the family: Raffaele, Jr. (who died when he was a young child), Rose, Frank, and Mary.

Raffaele and Angelina operated a small grocery store, which over the years, became known as the "penny candy store." Since people in the neighborhood had a hard time pronouncing "Molinaro," the store became known as "Monaire's." My mother still operates the business.

My mother has no real memories of her father, as she was just a toddler when he died. She remembers him playing with her, and remembers that he would act silly and stick coins to his forehead for her to retrieve.

As he was much older than my Grandmother and since he died before his children were old enough to really have good memories of him, Grandfather remains a somewhat mysterious figure.

While cleaning out an old chest, we recently came across the posted photo, which is the only photo known to exist of him. We believe the child in his arms is his daughter Rose.
