Shortly before 2 o'clock this morning a young man named O. L. Vincent, who was out in search of his uncle, Joe Apperson, found his dead body lying across the U.P. railroad track about three-quarters of a mile from the depot. One leg and one arm were completely severed from the body, which was otherwise shockingly mangled.

News of the accident did not reach the city until nearly 3 o'clock, when industrious efforts were made to find Coroner Moore and have the body conveyed to an undertaking establishment.

The information that could be obtained regarding the matter was rather meager. Apperson, who is a carpenter by trade, had been drinking quite freely, it is said, during the whole of yesterday. His nephew was with him up to a late hour, and finally left him.

About 1 o'clock a party of men were seen going in the direction of the railroad and as far as can be learned Apperson was one of them. It is thought that he boarded a freight train with the intention of riding toward his home and on the way lost his hold and fell to the ground. His death must have been almost instantaneous.

Apperson was well known about the city. His principal occupation was that of a carpenter. He was about 40 years of age, and a brother of Mr. J.A. Apperson, the surveyor. He leaves a wife and two children.
