In tracing John Francis Sims, I wrote to the Railroad Retirement Board; since he had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad - they have their own system for retirement monies and do not pay into Social Security. It was a long shot to find some records and it worked! The address at the time was: The United States of America, Railroad Retirement Board, 844 Rush Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

The original response letter was dated 12 Oct 1978

This is in reference to your letter requesting information on John Francis Sims. Please find attached copies of information in our file which appeared to pertain to your request. The poor condition of some of the copies is due to the age of the material being copied. We hope this information will be of assistiance to you in your research. 2. A from filled out by JFS to the Dept of Commerce (Census Bureau) requesting that they release information petaining to him to the UPRR/Railroad Retirement Board to verify his address/occupation
3. Application for benefits under the railroad retirement acts because of the death of an employee, an application or an annuitant
4. A letter written by his daughter, Mrs. Naomia F. (Sims) Stevens to explain the situation after her mother's death
5. State of Wyoming Death Certificate #1938/89 for JFS
6. family statement; listing of al living family members of JFS, including siblings
7. old Xerox copies of JFS family Bible with the names and birthdates of his children and his marriage date
8. RRB Claims Service Supplemental information to Question 14 (form letter)
9. Letter from daughter Mrs. Naomia F. (Sims) Stevens asking for the return of her parent's marriage certificate and family record; also requesting back pay to finish funeral payment
10. Marriage License, Mill Creek, Union County, Illinois 15 November 1897, by John Brown, Justice of the Peace
(Just a notation about the Railroad Retirement Board and their records - they now have a copy and research fee for their records, but in general, the records were excellent and worth the fees.)


One other additional document in the file is the death certificate for Lillie Belle Sims from Washington State, #120/35 30 July 1939. The burial plot is located as Lot 1844, Space A, Section SW1/4

John Francis Sims died at the age of 65 from Coronary thrombosis. Hobbs & Finkbiner Funeral Home officiating. He was buried in Lakeview Cemetery Lot 1844, Space A, Secition SW 1/4. Date of burial was Jan 22, 1938.
