Ross was born in Amarillo, Texas, to Wayne Dee and Dorothy Elizabeth Maxwell. During his younger years, he resided in Dalhart, Amarillo, McLean, and Turkey, Texas. He graduated from high school in 1968 and from West Texas State University in 1972 with a BA in Business Management.
From 1975 to 1982, he worked for Sears, and from 1982 to 2006, he was a Wal-Mart management employee specializing in troubleshooting and maintenance. He was last employed with Wal-Mart in Rogers and Bentonville, Ark., from 1982 to 2006, before his health forced him to retire. Ross never married. He retired in Meridian Manor in 2006.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Wayne Dee Maxwell in 1985.
Survivors include his mother, Dorothy E. Maxwell, of Clifton; sister, Marilyn Sue Holland, of Clifton; brother, Dr. Jon Thomas Maxwell, of Oklahoma; and other relatives and many friends.
