Mary was the daughter of William and Isabella Ort. She was married to John W. Patterson in Harvey Co. KS on February 29, 1880 at the residence of George W. Kanard who performed the ceremony. They had five known children: William M., Eva, Thomas Uptegraff, John Westly, and Emma Belle. At some point in time after Emma Belle's birth, John Patterson left the family and returned to Illinois where he remarried and raised another family. He is buried in Franklin Co., IL. having died in 1933. It is reported that Mary A. died of consumption.

The graves were registered in the name of John W. Patterson and adjoin those of Zenas S. and Elizabeth Spore. Elizabeth was a half-sister to John W.
