Public Ledger, August 9, 1858:

On the 8th instant, after a lingering illness, Mrs. ABAGAIL McCARTER, aged 51 years
A light is from our household gone,
A voice we loved is still'd -
A place is vacant at our hearths,
Which never can be fill'd
The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the residence of her husband, Pennsylvania avenue, west of Twenty Fourth street, on Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, without further notice.

Two grand-daughters were named after her; Abigail H. McArthur, born December 2, 1860 to her son Joseph P. and Abigail McArthur born November 1865 to her son John.
