Carolyn Jane Hammond McMahan, 80, formerly of 1224 Browning Ave., Birmingham, AL., died August 8, 2008 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville, Va.

Born December 28, 1927 in Valley Head, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Col. Burlington Hammond and the late Ruby Belle Hammond.

She was married to Robert Stanley (Mac) McMahan, who died in 1972. She lived for many years in Birmingham where she worked for A&P and Kroger. She loved the natural world, especially wildflowers and watching birds and the Lookout Mountain area of Alabama where she grew up.

She is survived by a daughter, Lin Benefield and son-in-law, Gary Benefield, of Danville, Va.; a son, Robert Stanley McMahan Jr., of Danville, Ky.; grandson, Chris Benefield; granddaughter-in-law, Meg Benefield and great-grandson, Will Benefield, of Minneapolis, Minn.

A graveside service will be on Tuesday, August 12 at 11 a.m. in Valley Head Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Russell officiating. Burt Funeral Home in Valley Head is in charge of arrangements.
