JOHN'S MIDDLE NAME: There was never a middle name mentioned or seen for him. BUT the name Joseph appears in three of his children's names" Daniel JOSEPH, Anna JOSEPHINE and Mary JOSEPHINE. Also, his nephew, JOHN JOSEPH Page, appears to be named after him.

Between 1861 (Bridget's birth) and 1864 (Sarah's birth) John and his parents and siblings moved from Madison, Jefferson Co, Indiana to Indianapolis, Marion Co, Indiana.

In December 1869 John became the first apprentice boy on the Indianapolis News (first printed December 7, 1869). In 1873 he went to St Louis where he remained until 1875. In the 1875 St Louis City Directory he was a printer and boarded at 612 Walnut. At that time he went to Vicksburg, Mississippi and engaged in the lumber business with his maternal uncle, returning to Indianapolis and re-entering the employ of The News several years later.

He married 27 Nov 1879 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, Indiana; his wife: Sarah Ann McGinnis Maloney (1855-1902). John and Sarah appear on the 1880 census in Vicksburg, Mississippi. John is listed as a clerk.

John's mother died in January of 1886. They came back to Indianapolis between January of 1886 and December of 1887 (his son James' birth).

After John's wife died in 1902 her sister, Aunt 'Bid' Bridget Bowers came to live with him and his children. Aunt Bid raised nine of John's children. Aunt Bid's only child, Eddie, had drowned in White River in 1898 and she was divorced.

John remained with the paper until February 1921 at which time he was stricken with paralysis. At this time his son, John and daughters Sarah and Mary lived with him. Both Sarah and Mary had married and returned home after failed marriages. Mary brought her daughter, Ann, with her. Sarah took her maiden name back.

John died at age 71 years 6 months 15 days.
